MAN OF THE MILLENNIUM - MAHATMA GANDHI

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Indian Lawyer, the Father of the Nation universally recognized as Mahatma in the eyes of millions was born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar.  A worshiper of God Vishnu, follower of Jainism, leader of India's independence movement, believer in non-violence, fasting, meditation and a vegetarianism shook the world in his own gentle way.

Gandhiji  came across many injustice done to him and to Indians . He vowed to root out the deep disease of color prejudice and suffer hardships to fight against discrimination.  He wrote to the British Viceroy Lord Irwin "My ambition is no less than to convert the British people through non-violence and thus make them see the wrong they have done to India".

His life and teachings inspired activists including Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela.

In 1930 Time's Magazine named him "Man of the Year"

In 2007 the UN declared Gandhiji's birthday 2nd Oct as The International Day of Non Violence.

Gandhiji's image appears on paper currency issued by Reserve Bank of India.

SATYAMEV JAYATE - TRUTH ALWAYS TRIUMPHS

Gandhiji not only preached the truth but also practiced it.

AN EYE FOR AN EYE WILL MAKE THE WHOLE WORLD BLIND

Gandhiji said Anger and Hatred can never help achieve anything.
Their outcome have always been negative.

FORGIVENESS IS NOBILITY

Gandhiji taught people to forgive them who commit wrong and speak harshly.

EAT SIMPLE FOOD IN RIGHT QUANTITY

According to Gandhiji, a simple but nutritious meal in the morning
would give a good start to your day

CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS

Gandhiji maintained utmost cleanliness around him and inspired others too

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD

According to Gandhiji , you can never force your teachings on others,

unless you follow what you preach.

PRESERVERANCE

Gandhiji taught us that if you are unable to achieve success in a short time,

do not get distracted by other options.

Focus on it  and never give us unless you achieve it.

THE MIND IS STRONGER THAN THE BODY

Gandhiji was frail but his mind was mightier.

The Britishers bowed down to his mental strength and left India.

Gandhiji's death was a sudden shock to the world.  Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru addressed his countrymen over All India Radio saying  the light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere.  His death 30th January is commemorated as Martyr's Day in India.

There are three temples in India dedicated to Gandhiji - Sambalpur in Orissa, Nidagatta village near Kadur in Chikmagalur in Karnataka, Chityal in Nalgonda Telangana.

The Gandhi Memorial in Kanyakumari resembles Central India Hindu temples

The ;Tamuikkam or Summer Palace in Madurai is now the Mahatma Gandhi Museum.

Gandhiji serves as an Inspiring example for us to learn , to emerge stronger and achieve success
