AUGUST 8 1942 QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT

Does anybody remember the importance of 8 August.  It is the turning point in Indis's struggle for Independence.  On August 8 1942 Mahatma Gandhi started the    QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT and decided to launch a mass civil disobedience movement 'DO or DIE' call to force British to leave India.Gandhiji had to do this as Britishers wanted to involve India into World War II and asked for Indian soldiers to fight for them.  They sent a mission to India called Cripps Mission.  Somehow our National leaders were not happy and rejected this mission.  Gandhiji gave a fiery speech at Gowalia Tank Maidan Park which was later called August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai.  Many prominent leaders involved were Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Subhas Chandra Bose, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, Ashoka Mehta, Jaya Prakash Narayan, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad and Chakravarti Rajgopalachari.  Gandhiji said ours is not a  drive for power but purely a non violent fight for India's independence.  There is no room for dictatorship.  It is only for the freedom of our country.  The power will belong to the people of India when freedom is attained.  In Ahimsa there is no final failure or defeat.  Our people will forget the difference between Hindus and Muslims and think as Indians only.   This movement led to violence and Gandhiji was held responsible.  All the prominent leaders were arrested.  Gandhiji urged Indians to follow the orders of British.  However the World War II ended in 1945 and India got Independence in 1947
