INDIAN AIR FORCE DAY - 8 OCTOBER - know about IAF
The Indian Airforce or Bhartiya Vayu Sena was established on October 8, 1932 by the British Empire under the Indian Air Force Act to aid the Army that was fighting on land. It's first flight came into being on 1st April 1933. After Independence of India in 1947, Indian Air Force was named Royal Indian Air Force. When India turned Republic in 1950 the prefix Royal was removed and it is now known as Indian Air Force.
The celebration day of IAF is attended by the Chiefs of all the defence services namely Indian Airforce, Army and Navy. At present the Indian Air Force is the fourth largest air force in the world after the United States, Russia and China. It is also the seventh strongest air force in the world.
The Hindon Air Force Station of the Indian Air Force is the largest in Asia and 8th largest in the world. Its motto 'NABHA SPARSHAM DEEPTHAM' is taken from the eleventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita The four-star officer with the rank of Air Chief Marshal leads the force. Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria who hails from a village near Agra is the present Air Chief Marshal. The President of the country serves to the Indian Air Force as a Commander-in-Chief,
In 1971 Indo-Pak War during the battle of Longwala the Indian Air Force destroyed more than 40 APCs, 29 Pakistani tanks and a railway train. Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was the first and only IAF officer to be awarded the Param Veer Chakra for his bravery in the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
The Indian Government, granted the rank of Marshal of the Air Force to Arjan Singh , thus making him the first and the only Five-star officer with the Indian Air Force and ceremonial chief of the air force in January 2002
During its 'Raahat' mission in Uttarakhand flash floods, IAF made a world record in aviation by rescuing almost 20000 civilians.
IAF has one Air Marshal at a time and Padmavathy Bandopadhyay was the first woman Air Marshal of the Indian Air Force. Also, she was the second woman in the Indian armed forces who was promoted to three star rank. The 2019 Balakot airstrike is the latest achievement of IAF.

The IAF has been involved in numerous wars: World War II, Sino-Indian War, Operation Cactus, Operation Vijay, Kargil War, Indo-Pakistan War, Congo Crisis, Operation Poomalai, Operation Pawan , Operation Meghdoot and few others. It has also been involved in the United Nations peacekeeping missions.
IAF has a base in Tajikistan named Farkhor Air base located in Farkhor, India's first and only military base outside the country. According to Flight International, there are around 1,721 aircraft including Su-30MKI, Jaguars, Mirage-2000, Apache and Chinook in service with the Indian Air Force.
